SQL Server 2008 R2 Gets SP2 in 2012

SQL Server 2008 R2 users can now test a nearly ready version of Service Pack 2 (SP2).

What will you find in this little gem? Like most service packs, it is not designed to trot out new features, but to bat bugs, fix flaws, make up for mistakes, burnish blemishes... Ah, you get the point.
This pack has no less than 25 fixes, including many that have already rolled out and are now rolled up in SP2. Here are few highlights from  Kurt Mackie's report:
"Microsoft listed three highlights to be found in the CTP. It's designed to fix an issue where charts in Windows 7 reports get inexplicably cropped. Another fix addresses a problem with 'hidden rows,' which causes rows or cells to get collapsed in reports. Finally, Microsoft added a fix for a caching problem associated with 'batch files containing the alter table command,' according to the company's announcement."

Microsoft and the SQL Server Sustained Engineering team are pleased to announce the availability of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 CTP. Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 includes product improvements based on requests from the SQL Server community and hotfix solutions provided in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cumulative Updates 1 to 5. Both the Service Pack and Feature Pack updates are available for download on the Microsoft Download Center.
Below are a few key customer requested updates in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CTP:

  • Reporting Services Charts Maybe Zoomed & CroppedCustomers using Reporting Services on Windows 7 may sometime find charts are zoomed in and cropped. To work around the issue some customers set ImageConsolidation to false.
  • Batch Containing Alter table not cachedIn certain situations with batch files containing the alter table command, the entire batch file is not cached.
  • Collapsing Cells or Rows, If Hidden Render IncorrectlySome customers who have hidden rows in their Reporting Services reports may have noticed rendering issues when cells or rows are collapsed. When writing a hidden row, the Style attribute is opened to write a height attribute. If the attribute is empty and the width should not be zero.
